Seventh Annual IHGB Summer Book List
Attention avid book readers: It’s time to turn in your selections for the Seventh Annual IHGB Summer Book List. Hooray!
This is a huge deal, people. The contents gathered on this list have introduced me to incredible characters like Katniss Everdeen and Jamie Fraser. And for that, I will never be the same. In a good way.
What I’m saying is…respect the power of this list.
Take a moment to think about books that have impacted you in the last several years. We have a variety of interests here at IHGB, so no genre should be neglected. I say this as a person who has read every popular YA novel in the last decade. If it’s a love story or it’s about pop culture, I will devour it.
With that said, please include your murder mysteries, sci-fi thrillers, or anything else that sticks to your ribs. There are factions of bibliophiles who love that stuff and I will not exclude them because I can’t take a little bit of blood and gore.
Do you love classics? Send them my way. Was there a faith-based book that changed your life? I’d love to know about it. Is It’s a Love Story your favorite book from 2019? I understand.
The process is simple: I’ll collect the data via this comment section, email, or my social media and compile my findings into a grand list. That list will be FREE! As a bonus, the list includes asterisks by the names of selections that have been nominated MULTIPLE years in a row.
I know. I have my work cut out for me, but it’s worth it.
Are you ready? Let’s do this.
Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng
If you want clean regency, I’d say anything by Sarah Eden or Julia Donaldson. Kiss of a Stranger (Eden) or Edenbrook (Donaldson) are particular favorites.
“This Tender Land” by Kent Krueger. One of the best! It was an audiobook- great narration and the author knows how to weave a tale. And anything by Charles Martin.
“The Huntress” and “The Rose Code” by Kate Quinn (historical novels)
“Recursion” by Blake Crouch (sci-fi)
The Throne of Glass series that I started because Lincee recommended it. It totally hooked me (and curse the library for taking so long for my next book to come in!)
I started Throne of Glass series because of Lincee too.
The Rose Code by Kate Quinn
The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica
The Return by Nicholas Sparks
The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson
The Ickabog by J.K. Rowling
Genre: Childrens
Why I Liked It: Although set in a fantasy world, it’s a hilarious commentary on our times. And when you meet a fellow by the name of Fraudysham, you instinctively know he must be trustworthy. 😉
Winterborne Home for Vengeance and Valor by Ally Carter
Genre: Children’s
Why I liked it: The characters are lovable, the tale is heartwarming, and there is plenty of mystery and humor to go around.
The Story of the Trapp Family Singers
Genre: Biography
Why I Liked It: It’s everything that happened after The Sound Of Music movie ended.
Firebird by Kathy Tyers
Genre: Sci Fi Christian-themed Romantic Suspense
Why I Liked It: I first read this 20-ish years ago and I’m still half in love with Brennen Caldwell.
Calculated by Nova McBee
Genre: Suspense
Why I Liked It: An incredibly creative retelling of the biblical Joseph story set in modern times with a female protagonist.
Chickens, Gin, and a Maine Friendship by E.B. White
Genre: Letters / Biography
Why I Liked It: It made me laugh.
The Hidden Mage series by Melanie Cellier
Genre: YA fantasy
Why I Liked It: Compelling characters set in a fun fantasy world
The Kinsmen Chronicles by Jill Williamson
Genre: Fantasy
Why I Liked It: Extremely detailed fantasy world with Christian themes.
Obsidian Queen series by Shannon Lynn Cook
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Why I Liked It: Fluffy read with snarky funny female protagonist and swoon worthy love interest. A job hunting down magical criminals should never be allowed to get in the way of a girl’s fashion.
I’ve been obsessed with anything by Elin Hilderbrand. Excellent summer reading!
I have had so many great recommendations from this list over the years!! Glad it is still going strong.
I am currently loving WWII stories and these were the standouts:
Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay
The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris
Librarian of Auschwitz by Antonio Hurbe
Not in the WWII storyline, these are my standouts so far this year:
Kindred by Octavia Butler
The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa
American Royals by Katherine McGee
Secrets of a Charmed Life by Susan Miessner
