The great debate
I’m on the phone with my good friend Chance last night and for some reason, we get on the topic of the top five Michael Jackson songs of all time.
Chance: Well…you’d have to put “Man in the Mirror” in there for sure.
Lincee: Of course. One of his best. And I’d put “The Way You Make Me Feel” near the top.
We then agree that “Beat It,” “Bad,” and “Thriller” can be left out of the top five. Good songs, but not top five material. I was pretty surprised that Chance and I were on the same page with that decision.
Lincee: Okay. Two down…three to go. “Smooth Criminal” has to be one of them.
Chance: Are you kidding? No. “Black or White.”
I almost hung up the phone. Clearly Chance is on crack.
And we haven’t even DISCUSSED MJ’s Off the Wall album.
So here are my picks. I had a little help from my I-Tunes to see which songs I listened to the most.
And the winners are…
1. The Way You Make Me Feel
2. Will You Be There (Free Willy soundtrack)
3. Man in the Mirror
4. Smooth Criminal
5. Wanna Be Startin’ Something (if I had to pick ONE from OTW)
Also right up there:
1. Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough
2. Rock With You
3. She’s Out of My Life
5. The Girl is Mine
7. Billie Jean
What do you think? Have you heard “Will You Be There” and do you too see yourself one day singing this song in front of a gospel choir? Are there any songs we overlooked? Is Chance on crack for liking “Black and White?”
Yes, Chance is on crack for liking Black and White. Now I’m mad that the song is in my head! I like your top five though! 🙂
I’m going to have to agree… Chance is on crack… Black & White bugs. I like old school MJ the best…. from what you have – I like:
1. Rock With You
2. Smooth Criminal
3. Wanna Be Startin’ Something
4. Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough
And I have to comment on the Jazzercise blog – I thought I was going to pee my pants when I read that! Love the website – can’t wait for The Bachelor blogs this season, you always make Tuesday’s more fun!
Good choice on Smooth Criminal. I also like Billie Jean.
“Will You be There” is my absolute fav! I think I might have a ‘homemade’ music video of that somewhere with some crazy friends 🙂
OMG! I always sing Will You Be There at the top of my lungs. I thought I was the only one who had the gospel choir dream.
Gotta love MJ, even though he’s a perv.
love love LOVE Will You Be There and Man In The Mirror. My top two for sure. Black or White? Checks Chance’s pants – must be hiding the crack pipe. Crack is whack and so is that song with the creepy morphing faces video! Just my $.02
Free Willie! OMG I loved that movie (and the song!!!)
1) The Way You Make Me Feel (good call)
2) I Just Can’t Stop Loving You
3) Man in the Mirror (I remember thinking a woman sang this when I was little.. just a random fact for you)
4) Billy Jean
5) Beat It
and 6) You Are Not Alone (cause I just couldn’t leave this one out)
I love PYT .. my fav! also that song about Ben.. that little mouse?? gotta look back and say.. oh we should of known…
I liked Black or White…wierd song, but I loved it….it doesn’t matter! ;o)
My faves would be:
1) Rock With You
2) The Way You Make Me Feel
3) Will You Be There (yes. . I had the choir dream too)
4) She’s Out of My Life
5) Tie: Smooth Criminal and Human Nature
Black or White? Seriously? Chance, step away from the pipe! It will only do you harm!! Do I smell an intervention?
Umm, is no one remembering “Ben”? Clearly, top five material.
dude – wanna be startin’ something was Thriller, not Off the Wall… Did anyone catch the MJ tribute on Mtv’s americas best dance crew? totally awesome dance moves! here it is on youtube…. if the link doesnt work, its episode 5.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Q4c5ijfadE
yes, your friend crazy. That doesnt even crack the top 25. Lady In My Life from the Thriller album is not only my favorite Michael Jackson song, but is my favorite song period of all time.
OK, first of all haters, step off “Black or White.” You know you loved when Macaulay Culkin lip-synched that part and stop pretending you didn’t.
Second, I can totally get behind you on “Smooth Criminal,” Lincee, but I cannot countenance a top-5 that does not include “Billie Jean.” Do you remember where you were the first time you saw the Moon Walk? I was 6, wearing a swimsuit because I’d just come in from the pool, eating Oreos, and watching the Motown 25th Anniversary special, which is when he unveiled it, and basically changed my life. I believe for our generation, it ranks up there with “Where were you when the Challenger exploded” as life-defining moments.
And how are you ALL forgetting “Scream” with his sister Janet? Hello??? TWO crazy Jacksons for the price of one? Not to be missed.
