The great debate
I’m on the phone with my good friend Chance last night and for some reason, we get on the topic of the top five Michael Jackson songs of all time.
Chance: Well…you’d have to put “Man in the Mirror” in there for sure.
Lincee: Of course. One of his best. And I’d put “The Way You Make Me Feel” near the top.
Chance: Clearly.
We then agree that “Beat It,” “Bad,” and “Thriller” can be left out of the top five. Good songs, but not top five material. I was pretty surprised that Chance and I were on the same page with that decision.
Lincee: Okay. Two down…three to go. “Smooth Criminal” has to be one of them.
Chance: Are you kidding? No. “Black or White.”
I almost hung up the phone. Clearly Chance is on crack.
And we haven’t even DISCUSSED MJ’s Off the Wall album.
So here are my picks. I had a little help from my I-Tunes to see which songs I listened to the most.

yes, your friend crazy. That doesnt even crack the top 25. Lady In My Life from the Thriller album is not only my favorite Michael Jackson song, but is my favorite song period of all time.
OK, first of all haters, step off “Black or White.” You know you loved when Macaulay Culkin lip-synched that part and stop pretending you didn’t.
Second, I can totally get behind you on “Smooth Criminal,” Lincee, but I cannot countenance a top-5 that does not include “Billie Jean.” Do you remember where you were the first time you saw the Moon Walk? I was 6, wearing a swimsuit because I’d just come in from the pool, eating Oreos, and watching the Motown 25th Anniversary special, which is when he unveiled it, and basically changed my life. I believe for our generation, it ranks up there with “Where were you when the Challenger exploded” as life-defining moments.
And how are you ALL forgetting “Scream” with his sister Janet? Hello??? TWO crazy Jacksons for the price of one? Not to be missed.
